Viticulturist

We’re seeking a hands-on person to take a leading role in the vineyard. The successful applicant will have experience performing or managing most aspects of vineyard operations. This role could suit a skilled operator looking to make the next move in their career or someone seeking a more hands-on role. A viticulture & winemaking degree (or similar) along with experience are part of what’s needed.

We’re a small team. The successful candidate will need to be multi-skilled and enjoy working in a varied role that includes hands-on work. From time to time there will be the opportunity to work in other areas of the business, including in the winery during harvest. You’ll be rewarded with the satisfaction of making some of the best wines from Marlborough.  

Sustainable premium winemaking is what Huia is appreciated for around the world. Huia has made organic wines since 2009. Our traditional method sparkling wines have a loyal following in NZ and overseas. Our Rapaura vineyard has 6.5 planted hectares with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah. We work closely with other growers around Marlborough. The Viticulturist will work with our growers to ensure we have the right grapes to make great wines.

Preferred attributes:

• People person – this role will involve working with the Winemaker & owner, other vineyard staff & contractors and harvest/casual staff.

• A willingness to learn and share your knowledge in a respectful manor.

• Passionate about wine and growing high quality grapes to make high quality wine.

• Experience and knowledge (or demonstrate a commitment) with biodynamic and organic grape growing.

• Sound verbal and written communication skills.

• Skilled user of IT systems including MS Office apps and Vintrace.

• Attention to detail.

• Be adaptable and able to think on your feet – vineyards have many surprises and our industry has undergone massive change in the last 5 years.
